Beachland Ballroom turns 25: A story of music, passion and perseverance

We celebrate anniversaries by years. But itâs the nights that matter in the club business. Three bad ones in a row can ruin your month. And three bad months can slam the doors shut.
This weekend, the Beachland Ballroom is celebrating its 25th year. Itâs more than a story of a premier club and cool concerts. This is a tale about music lovers who made a difference by pushing ahead against all odds.
âThe banks thought we were crazy when we went to get a loan to open a club,â says Cindy Barber, who co-founded the club with Mark Leddy. âThey thought the business was risky, the neighborhood was bad and that we should do something in the Flats.â
But their instincts proved to be correct. They bought an old Croatian hall on Waterloo Road, a stretch in Collinwood that was left for dead. They helped revive the area and, even better, were able to keep overhead and costs low, along with ticket, food and drink prices.
Their passion for music became infectious. Over 25 years, the Beachland has been a spring board for local and national artists on the rise and legendary acts making a comeback.
The list of memorable shows is endless: White Stripes, Black Keys, Oh Sees, Neko Case, Robert Lockwood Jr., the Cramps, Arthur Lee and Love, Ian Hunter.
Of course, there were bleak nights when the Beachland was hanging by a thread â the kind a hangman brings to the gallows. But their crusader-like belief in music and the neighborhood kept them going.
You see, more than a business, this is a story of two people who believed in something bigger and, 25 years later, made a difference.
Thursday, the Beachland kicks off its 25th anniversary celebration with Les Green and Cory Grinder and the Playboy Scouts (tavern).
Friday, itâs Elephants Dancing with Ashley LaRue Band (tavern) and the New Mastersounds with Organ Fairchild (ballroom). Saturday, itâs Greg Cartwright & the Pull Chains with the Alarm Clocks (tavern) and Mourning [A] BLKstar, Tyvek and This Moment in Black History (ballroom). Shows start at 7 p.m. For tickets, go here.

Medieval mayhem: A fast-growing, crazy sport of knights is coming for you

So, you think MMA cage-fighting is a spectacle straight out of the Middle Ages? Well, you ainât seen nothing yet.
Sound the medieval trumpets for Armored MMA -- the fastest-growing sport of savagery.
Call it medieval human cockfighting where combatants don full body armor and shields and wield battle axes and swords for epic matches conducted in a cage.
Weâll get our first glimpse of the insanity on June 7th â when Armored MMA hits the Hall of Fame Village by the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton. For tickets, go here.
Yes, itâs bizarre and twisted, but thatâs what accounts for the phenomenal growth of the sport, whose roots go back 900 years. The modern version goes back to the 1990s, when medieval competitions in Russia spread across Europe and Asia.
There are few rules in the three-round bouts. Combatants engage in hand-to-hand combat and martial arts kicks and tricks and forearm blows. The knights are armed with weapons â but, donât worry, theyâre blunted and inflict damage by applying force rather than stabbing or cutting.
Hey, weâre civilized and donât want any heads lopped off, right?
Chinese hot pot phenomenon is hitting Crocker Park

The fast-casual approach to Yunnan-style rice noodles is a hot pot phenomenon in China. Now itâs coming to Westlake.
Enter Ten Seconds Yunnan Rice Noodle. The restaurant, part of a chain with more than 750 shops in China, is set to take over the old Zoup space in Crocker Park in late-spring or early summer, according to Crocker management.
Ten Seconds specializes in âcrossing the bridgeâ noodles that originated in the southwestern province of Yunnan during the Qing Dynasty.
It also boasts a fast-casual approach: You choose your broth (tomato, chicken, pork bone or pickled peppers). Then come the proteins â beef or beef brisket or fish fillet.
Hot pot ingredients are served via 10 small plates that feature side meats and ingredients, along with large bowls of broth that are insulated to stay hot.
The delivery is based on a legend of a woman cooked for her husband while he was studying away on an island. She would have store the food in fire-heated ceramic pots to keep it warm.
Yunnan rice noodles are the focus, but the menu includes side dishes like spicy and sour potato slices, cucumbers with garlic sauce, shrimp tempura, vegetable rolls and Japanese takoyaki.

The 216 Rundown
A Cleveland institution is going out of business
The motto projects cheer: âWeâre proud to offer aisles of smiles to help you find your happy place.â The reality is very different.
After 82 years in business, the Hudson-based fabrics and crafts store will close and commence with going out of business sales in all 800 of its locations around the country.
Founded by German immigrants in 1943, as the Cleveland Fabric Shop, Joann was once the largest retailer of fabrics in the U.S. But sales declined precipitously in the wake of Covid and the rise online shopping.
It filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy twice in the last year. On Feb. 15, Joann announced that it was closing 500 stores to âright-sizeâ its footprint. The move wouldâve spared its area stores. On Monday, management announced the closing of the remaining 300 locations.
Looking back at legendary La Cave
La Cave made music history in the 1960s. The storied Euclid Avenue club hosted countless legendary acts -- Jefferson Airplane, Love, Traffic, Jeff Beck, Soft Machine, Neil Young and countless others.
Phil Ochs was a regular there. The Velvet Underground called Cleveland a home away from home thanks to this legendary club, which hosted 24 shows â back when Lou Reed and the band couldnât get booked in other parts of the country.
At 7 p.m. Thursday, author Steve Traina will appear at the Music Box, 1148 Main Avenue, Cleveland, to talk about the club and his new book, âLa Cave: Cleveland's Legendary Music Club and the â60s Folk-to-Rock Revolution.â

Itâs National Pokemon Day and you know what that means⌠Actually, does anyone really know?
Either way, Sora is celebrating. The colorful sushi bar in the Flats East Bank is throwing a Pokemon bash to mark the release of the original Pocket Monster Red and Green video game in 1996.
Sora is going all-out with themed food, drinks, dĂŠcor, free gaming and prizes.
Itâs part of a national celebration of Pokemon â the Japanese creature that has spawned an assembly line of movies, an animated series, trading card and video games.
Participating Pokemon League locations mark the day with games â and, in the case of Sora, sushi and cocktails.
