Fidelity Hotel opens: Immaculate design, a walk back into time

Photos by John Petkovic
New life has come to a forgotten street of downtown. The Fidelity Hotel has opened its doors on East Sixth Street
But more than that, it provides a walk into the past – not just because this was once a storied part of Cleveland, but also because it looks and feels like another time.
Wait, is this a new hotel or some old gem that no one knew existed and was just discovered and dusted off for the public?
The 97-room boutique hotel is a striking mix of Art Deco and Mid-century modern design – with some Beaux Arts flair to make it all the more interesting.
The deep, dark woodwork, floral wallpaper and titled floors are reminiscent of the 1920s and ‘30s – decades when Cleveland architecture reached its zenith. Check out the arched walkways and symmetrical, subtle, decorative touches
The Club Room restaurant and bar looks like a classic spot from the 1940s and ‘50s, with its sophisticated hues, streamlined layout and mid-century modern design. The look and vibe match the color scheme, design and woodwork of the rooms.
More than retro, it looks like a restoration to the glory days of the Fidelity Mortgage Building, built in the 1919, and this once-glorious part of downtown.
From the 1920s to the ‘60s, the East Sixth and Short Vincent area was the epicenter of city nightlife with its strip of bars, restaurants and clubs. They all but disappeared in the ‘80s and the area became dead zone.
For decades, the only reminders of that time came in vintage photos. The Fidelity Hotel – which was built from and is the culmination of a three-year build -- feels like old photos come to life.

Dog super sleuths strike again!

Photos courtesy of Remi’s Pet Recovery
Call it a doggy detective service. Since 2016, Remi’s Pet Recovery has used sleuth tricks to find hundreds of lost dogs and reunite them with their owners.
The Brook Park non-profit has used a variety of tracking methods – using ‘lost dog’ signs, cameras, maps, food stations, trap locations and tips from strangers.
All of them came in handy when they tracked down Barkley – a North Royalton pup was lost in the cold for 24 days.
All seemed lost until a tip from a homeowner in the wooded area of the city’s Pinestream Community off Edgerton Road.
He stopped Remi’s volunteer detectives while they were placing signs in the area to tell them that he seen a dog that looked like Barkley. They proceeded to set up a food station and traveled throughout the area for days in the freezing weather.
“The food station and a long, stressful week of cat and mouse began with heartfelt worry of the dangerous weather elements & if Barkley could even survive,” according to Remi’s.
A sighting led them to a second food station and then back to the first one – where he was found, hobbling with an injured back leg.
But he was found and returned home as was reunited with his family.
The AI war has begun. Is the U.S. ready for it?

Never before has the introduction of a single product had such a profound impact.
On Monday, the introduction of a Chinese AI model called DeepSeek erased more than $1 trillion dollars in market cap for American tech companies.
Nvidia, the semi-conductor titan that has led to the AI gold rush, shed $593 of its value after it dropped nearly 17 percent – the worst one-day loss for a company in stock market history.
Deepseek claims that its free, open-source model only took two months and $6 million to build.
America has dominated the development of AI, which has led to a historic rise in tech and semiconductor stocks.
Are those days numbered?
The impact of a low-cost, open-source product has been called a “Sputnik moment” for the American AI industry – a reference to the 1950s and ‘60s space race between the U.S. and the U.S.S.R.
"If it’s true that DeepSeek is the proverbial 'better mousetrap,' that could disrupt the entire AI narrative that has helped drive the markets over the last two years," said Brian Jacobsen, chief economist at Annex Wealth Management. "It could mean less demand for chips, less need for a massive build-out of power production to fuel the models, and less need for large-scale data centers."
President Donald Trump said DeepSeek should be a “wake-up call for our industries that we need to be laser-focused on competing to win.”
Hulk Hogan is coming to share a beer with you

Whatcha gonna do when the Hulkster runs wild on you? Well, now’s your chance to find out.
The WWE Hall of Famer is coming to town – no, not to hit the ring or rip off his shirt.
“Well, let me tell you something brother! From the first time I stepped into the ring, I’ve always fought for something bigger than myself,” says Hogan.
That bigger thing is… beer.
HH is hitting five bars this weekend to, as they say in the wrestling world, “cut a promo” for his new Real American Beer and party with his Hulkamaniacs.
On Friday, it’s the Brew Kettle: 5288 Center Rd., Brunswick, (5:15 p.m.. to 7 p.m.) and The Farm, 1054 Old River Road, on the East Bank of the Flats (9 p.m. to 9:45 p.m.).
Saturday: TownHall: 1909 W. 25th Street., Cleveland, (9-9:30 p.m.); IVY, 1212 West Sixth Street, Cleveland, (10-10:30 p.m.); Barley House, 1261 West Sixth Street, Cleveland (10:30-11 p.m.).
“Blood is thicker than new Blood, dude!” Hulkster has often said. But it’s not thicker than his brew – which he boasts is “the most crushable light beer on the planet.”

No more Daiquiri: Crime concerns close downtown bar
The Frozen Daiquiri Bar and Restaurant has served its last drink. The downtown bar – 721 Bolivar Road – is being shut down the city after a series of incidents where police were called.
“We are working to shut [down] crime in the city no matter what the reason is or what the cause is, and what we knew was that building and that area was the center of these issues,” said Cleveland Law Director Mark Griffin.
In December, there was a shooting outside of the bar that left a 24-year-old man dead. Last April, two people were shot inside the Daiquiri.
Owner James Cleveland has stated that he is open to come to an agreement with the city that includes shutting it down and selling the business.
VINTAGE CLEVELAND
Short Vincent, 1954. Cleveland’s downtown legends were born around Short Vincent. For much of the 20th century, the 485-foot strip of bars, restaurants and clubs running between East Sixth and East Ninth streets was the epicenter of city nightlife. It all disappeared by the ‘80s and Short Vincent became a dead zone. The just-opened Fidelity Hotel hopes to bring new life and legends to the area.
