There’s nothing like the excitement that accompanies Opening Day at the baseball field. It’s confirmation that, yes, spring really is here and a hint that we are heading toward summer.

Except for this year – which has greeted every sign of warmth with a snowball to the face.

The forecast for the 32nd consecutive opening day sell out calls for temperatures in the low-to-mid 30s – among the lowest in history for the opener.

Tuesday’s 4:10 p.m. opener against the White Sox won’t be as bad as 2007 – the infamous “snow game” against Seattle, which was called due to a blizzard. Then again, who knows.

Of course, there are other questions as the season starts:

What’s the status of the right side of the infield and the pitching staff in the wake of off-season trades?

Gabriel Arias and Carlos Santana start at second and first, respectively, and the rotation is set. But last year showed that things can change quickly.

Highly touted prospects Travis Bazzana, Juan Brito and oft-injured Chase DeLauter, and injured vets David Fry, Shane Bieber and John Means could shake up the roster.

There are other questions – about Progressive Field.

Like, What’s a ‘Fred Flintstone drumstick’?

The massive turkey stick is one of the many food additions as part of the biggest renovation to the stadium since it was opened in 1994.

The West Side Market and Guardians of Traffic inspired the designs of expanded food and drink areas, including Terrace Hall along the left-field line.

They’ll will sell everything from ‘Mozzarella Stick Sandwich’ to fried pickles to a variety of beers and wines.

Cleveland stars in new ‘Superman’ clip now playing in theaters

Hey, I know that one. And that one and that one and that one…

Warner Bros. has just released an extended sneak-peak of the new Superman movie – and yes, Cleveland appears to get as much airtime as the caped crusader himself.

Check out:

  • Clark Kent entering the Leader Building, which stands in for the Daily Planet;

  • Terminal Tower and 200 Public Square Building amid battle scenes;

  • Superman in pre-renovation Progressive Field;

  • Superman and Lois Lane floating in Cleveland Arcade;

  • The storefronts near the Old Stone Church (made to look like a retro bookstore, appliance dealer and pet shop);

  • Cleveland City Hall, made to look like the government seat of Metropolis;

  • Detroit-Superior Bridge, Progressive Field and the Arcade, all featured prominently.

The five-minute short, which premiered at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, is playing in theaters before showings of “A Minecraft Movie.”

Scheduled for release July 11, 2025, the film is the first entry in the DC Universe’s “Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.”

Filming in Cleveland and surrounding areas like Mentor, and Cincinnati is estimated to have brought 1,200 jobs to Northeastern Ohio and more than 3,400 jobs statewide.

Superman, the world’s first comic book superhero, was invented in Cleveland’s Glenville neighborhood by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. To watch, go here.

Xinji Noodle closing leaves Lorain Avenue less interesting

Xinji Noodle Bar.

Just when it seems as if the restaurant scene is growing, one place closes. And then when it looks as if it’s going the other way, one place opens. This is what happens in a mature restaurant market, where players and districts fight for market share.

The latest move comes from Xinji Noodle Bar, 4211 Lorain Avenue:

“With heavy hearts, we announce the closing of our restaurant. This decision comes after much reflection, and while it’s bittersweet, we are filled with gratitude for the amazing community we've had the privilege of serving.”

Xinji’s final day will be April 19.

When it opened in 2017, charming ramen spot with a modern take on Asian cuisine expanded the Ohio City dining scene eastward. But expansion in an increasingly mature market is tricky.

Platform, the heavyweight in the area, would close. The Plum would close and reopen as Heart of Gold.

Most eateries in trendy districts pursue nouveau American bistro concepts. Xinji stood out from the pack. It will be missed.

2025 Cleveland Guardians Bar and Restaurant Guide

The Cleveland Guardians are back with great expectations after last season’s run. The season arrives with renovations to the stadium and changings, er, openings and closings in the downtown bar and restaurant scenes. Here are 16 spots…

Geraci’s Slice Shop, 603 Prospect Avenue: A slice of pizza or a calzone served with an old-school vibe and ’80 tunes playing over the speakers makes for a fast, fun stop in between games.

A.J. Rocco’s, 828 Huron Road: Reopened in an expanded location, it mixes a low-key, cozy, vibe with fine drink and potent beer lists and pizza, wing and burger nights – to go with a deep list of salads, sandwiches and appetizers.

Whiskey Bar, 2123 East Second Street: It’s chill and feels like a European inn. It also boasts killer whiskey and Scotch lists and a simple, yet sophisticated food menu. Great after-game spot.

Clevelander, 834 Huron Road: It's always a magnet for party-hearty sports fans. Cheap beer pitchers. Rah-rah sports memorabilia on the walls. And a crowd that's proud to get loud.

Masthead Brewing, 1261 Superior Avenue: Pizza and beer, beer and pizza. Both are great here – so are the vibes.

Pickwick and Frolic, 2035 E. Fourth Street: ESPN Cleveland will broadcast from here before opening day. But the drinks menu and small bites makes it a fine pre-game stop any game.

Barrio, 503 Prospect Avenue: The downtown location of the build-you-own taco empire is usually packed – but the service is fast and the tequila is fine.

Betts at Kimpton Schofield Hotel, 2000 East Ninth Street: A shelter from the crowd but close to the stadium. Chic, but there's nothing stuffy about this hang and the prices hit right down the middle.

Pizza 216, 401 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland: A go-to stop because it's high-temp oven can complete a pie in a handful of minutes. The menu focuses on a wide range of thin-crust pizzas, including the Pierogi Pie.

Jack Cleveland Casino, 100 Public Square: The sportsbook area is a fun place to people watch – and the screens are big and are loaded with games.

Corner Alley, 402 Euclid Avenue: Yes, the bar area shows games on the TVs. You can play, too – thanks to the bowling alley and arcade-style games.

Harry Buffalo, 2120 E. Fourth Street: A short walk from the arena means it’s usually packed before a game. Beers, wings and TV sets.

Wild Eagle Saloon, 921 Huron Road, Cleveland: Old-school video games, ping pong, bocce and pool tables to go with a party-hearty vibe, lots of beers and fast-serve menu.

Good Pizza, 2057 East Fourth Street: Unique takes on NY-style pies along with salads and an olive-oil cake – and a five-minute walk from Rocket Arena.

Wonder Bar, 2044 E. Fourth Street: Check out the 40-foot bar, the classy woodwork, vintage feel and, yes, the classic cocktails. Feels like some other era…  Anyone wanna raise a glass to Gaylord Perry?

City Tap, 750 Prospect Ave. E., Cleveland: Dozens of beers on tap and an insane amount of burgers is one thing. The discounted brews and countless TVs over each table are enough to make you go bonkers watching the game.

The Indians played their first game in the park on 31 July 1932; however, the team continued to split its home season between the stadium and League Park until 1947. The team moved to Progressive Field in 1994. The Indians changed their name to Guardians for the 2022 season.
