Fish Fry Season is here: Your guide to a Cleveland tradition

Photos by John Petkovic

What started as a religious observance has become a rich Cleveland tradition.

Let’s go… it’s Fish Fry time.

Countless bars and restaurants observe Lent with them. Many have been doing so for decades. And while the ritual has a religious component, it appeals to lovers of tradition and old-school spots.

Bring on the 2025 Fish Fry Guide. Here are three, with 10 more in the Rundown (down below).

British American Club, 8564 Ravenna Road, Twinsburg: Founded by Brits in 1960 and now operating as a public club, the BAC is a cheeky ol’ time. It serves up classic English fish and chips. The mushy peas are delightful. Ditto for the experience. You can drink, too – and a Newcastle goes down swimmingly with the fish.  Good show, mates.

The Nash, 3563 East 80th Street, Cleveland: This Old World Slovenian gem hits more buttons than the accordion player. It rolls out live polka and open bowling to go with classic Cleveland vibes, drinks and a Lenten menu consisting of walleye, tilapia, shrimp, pierogis and mac & cheese. (Fish fry dates are March 7 and 21, and April 4.

Ridgewood Inn. 5759 Ridge Road, Parma: For seven decades, this Parma institution has been doing a fish fry every Friday. Little has changed over that time (except the price, of course) The Lenten menu includes Sauger Pike, Yellow Lake Erie Perch, Beer Battered Cod, Baked Scrod and, of course, a crowd favorite: pierogis. Timeless vibes abound.

A left-for-dead ‘Bridge to Nowhere’ is a hot tourist destination?

Photos courtesy Atlas Obscura

Yes, museums, sports teams and big events bring most tourists to Cleveland. But “ruins” have long summoned the adventurous.

Check out Hillandale Bridge in Hillandale Park, 27560 Tremaine Drive, Euclid. Dubbed “The Bridge to Nowhere,” the 1920s left-for-dead structure is a magnet for explorers and photographers.

Now, two popular travel sites are calling it a must-see destination.

The always-adventurous Atlas Obscura writes:

“The Hillandale Bridge was built for a housing development that [was] abandoned during the Great Depression of the 1930s… The structure stands as a testament to the bridge construction and engineering of the early automobile age, and is one of those hidden Cleveland gems worth seeking out for a hike or photographic excursion. Its soaring arches and picturesque curving roadway are still accessible to hike upon. They’re surrounded by quiet woods and cross a small, burbling creek at the bottom of a steep ravine.”

Islands.com, a site that specializes in sunny Hawaiian beaches, has called it an architectural wonder:

“For those seeking hidden gems and unraveling mysterious wonders, the Hillandale Bridge should be at the top of your bucket list. The striking architectural structure leads to absolutely nothing. With no roads on either side, it has been said that no car has ever crossed the bridge. Surrounded by woods, the landmark has an eerie feel that only adds to its appeal. You can only imagine how intriguing a grand structure that has been standing for roughly 100 years is for explorers, hikers, and historians alike — unless you visit it yourself.

Browns off-season preview: Some good news, but questions persist

Photos courtesy NFL, Cleveland Browns and Atlanta Falcons

The rumors and speculation will soon come to an end. The Browns off-season is about to get real on March 10. That’s the first day NFL teams can talk with free agents.

There are numerous questions confronting general manager Andrew Berry and head coach Kevin Stefanski:

Salary cap: The Browns received good news on this front. The NFL salary cap is increasing $22-$25 million this year, which gives the team more flexibility. It’s about $20 million over the cap – still a lot, but less than the $34 million just days ago. The team could rework existing contracts to get under the number.

Myles Garrett: He still wants out, but the Browns hold the cards. He’s signed for two more years and the team could keep him for four years, by using the franchise tag. The Browns want Garrett to stay and have a history of turning down trade demands (David Njoku, Baker Mayfield).

Free agents: The Browns have 19 unrestricted free agents, including starters Nick Chubb, Jedrick Wills Jr., Jameis Winston and Elijah Moore. All will be given the chance to walk.

Quarterback: The team has been linked to three vets: Daniel Jones (Giants), Carson Wentz (Chiefs) and Kirk Cousins (if he’s cut by the Falcons). They’d be place-holders if the Browns pick a QB in the draft.

Draft: The team is focusing on drafting a QB  – including Cam Ward or Shedeur Sanders (who wants to play for the Browns). They have other holes to fill: running back, offensive line, safety, wide receiver. The draft is deep at RB, and the team will likely take one in the second or third round.

10 of the best fish frys in Cleveland bars, restaurants and ethnic halls

Clevelanders love their fish frys. We have 10 more to whet your appetite:

Academy Tavern, 12800 Larchmere Boulevard, Cleveland:  The 1939 spot pairs old-school vibes with old-world specials and boasts a Friday fish fry that’s been going since it opened. Pike or perch?

Clubhouse, 6365 Pearl Road, Parma Heights: The portions are generous and the options wide-ranging at this classic spot. The Pollock Dinner is a bargain, and comes with fries, home fries or a baked potato or mac and cheese. Ditto for the Yungling Lager  Haddock and perch platters. It also serves salmon, scrod, shimp, fish taco options – as well a great lobster bisque.

Flat Iron, 1114 Center Street, Cleveland: This 1910 Flats mainstay is a throwback to another time. The Angel’s Lake Perch and Fish & Chips plate is a classic. The Clam Chowder is stellar.

German Central, 7863 York Road, Parma: The milieu is from another continent at this old-time ethnic hall – which serves an Icelandic cod fish fry, to go with your choice of potatoes, pierogis, cole slaw, applesauce and desserts.

Gunselman's, 21490 Lorain Road; Fairview Park: The 1936 classic serves up a pierogi poutine for non-fish lovers – to go with cod and perch fish fry platters.

Muldoon’s, 1020 East 185th Street, Cleveland: The happy-go-lucky Irish pub boasts green vibes and a cod sandwich and fish fry during Lent.

Post and Beam, 11790 Snow Road, Parma: The classic Parma spot rolls out an ambitious menu – more than a dozen entrees and sandwiches. The Cajun Lake Perch is great, but you can also get cod, walleye and tilapia dinners and sandwiches – as well as pierogis, cabbage and noodles and potato pancakes.

Prosperity Social Club, 1109 Starkweather Avenue, Cleveland: So many non-meat options at this 1939 spot -- from the haddock fish fry to the vegan option to the shrimp and grits.

Rush Inn, 17800 Detroit Road, Lakewood: The homey neighborhood bar is the go-to spot in the area for its long-running Friday specials – a perch fish fry and pierogi dinners.

Slovenian National Home, 6417 St Clair Avenue, Cleveland: Call it an excursion to the Old Worth and Old Cleveland. Polka bands provide the soundtrack and the meal is the deal. The Home serves up flounder, cod, shrimp and pierogi dinners that come with fries, cole slaw, clam chowder and dessert.
