Supernatural wonders, unusual attractions: 237 reasons to explore

The signs of spring have been misleading. But we hope springs eternal – and at some point, you just have to head outside and choose adventure.

Here comes Atlas Obscura. The always-adventurous travel and exploration site has released 237 Cool, Hidden, and Unusual Things to Do in Ohio.

It’s a stellar guide of the state and Cleveland that boasts little-known gems, strange attractions and supernatural wonders that are a road trip and close to home.

There are dozen spots  in and around Cleveland. Some are recognizable: the Cleveland Arcade, the Garfield Memorial, West Side Market, the house from “A Christmas Story.”

But most make for a unique adventure…

Worden’s Ledges in Hinkley: Sandstone cliffs in the middle of lush woods that were created by an ancient ocean that features carvings of faces (created in the 1940s). Nice place for a hike.

Buckland Museum of Witchcraft and Magick in Cleveland: A collection of occult artifacts and paraphernalia.

Yorkie Doodle Dandy Memorial in Rocky River Reservation: A tribute to four-pound dog found in New Guinea in 1944 that became a war hero.

Tim Willis’ Junkyard Playground in Cleveland’s Fairfax neighborhood: A collection of crazy monster trucks and crazy metal robots.

Hillandale Bridge in Hillandale Park, Euclid: Dubbed “The Bridge to Nowhere,” the 1920s left-for-dead structure is an abandoned architectural wonder that is a magnet for hikers and photographers.

We could go on and on. Instead, why not just head out, embrace spring and go exploring.

Guardians make another deal: They’re on TV

The Nolan Jones trade wasn’t the only late move made by the Guardians. Just when it seemed as if the majority of Greater Clevelanders wouldn’t be able to watch the team on TV, there’s a deal…

Hours before the season opener, the Guardians announced that games will be available on the following cable providers:

  • AT&T U-verse (Channel 736 or 1736)

  • COX (Channel 80)

  • DIRECTV Satellite and Streaming (Channel 662)

  • FuboTV

  • Spectrum (Channel 306 or 1306)

You can also watch via the team’s streaming service, CleGuardiansTV for $99.99 a year.

Campaign to bring NASA to Cleveland blasts off

The campaign for NASA is blasting off.

Cleveland City Council has passed a resolution calling on the Trump Administration to relocate NASA’s headquarters here.

“[It] would provide significantly lower cost of living and operational costs than Washington, D.C. resulting in substantial taxpayer savings; strategically align efforts to decentralize federal agencies,” the resolution states.

Council President Blaine Griffin also sent a letter to Vice President JD Vance and Jared Isaacman, the administrator nominee for NASA.

The push by city council echoes appeals from Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb, Cuyahoga County Executive Chris Ronayne and over 80 Northeast Ohio mayors.

It follows a letter from Ohio Governor Mike DeWine to the administration that calls Ohio “The birthplace of aviation, the heart of America's aerospace industry, and a critical hub for advanced technology, research, and manufacturing.”

Team NEO and the Greater Cleveland Partnership have spearheaded the local campaign to bring NASA to Cleveland.

Ohio lawmakers got the ball rolling with a letter to the administration earlier this month.

The campaign features a three-prong strategy: Ohio’s historic role in aviation; the existing space infrastructure and economic savings due to cheaper rents and a lower cost of living.

Wakanda weekend for Cleveland Orchestra

Who needs Wagner, Mozart and Stravinsky when you have… Black Panther?

Welcome to Wakanda, er, I mean, Severance Music Hall.

At 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, the Cleveland Orchestra will accompany a screening of the 2018 Marvel film with a performance of  Ludwig Goransson’s Grammy-winning score.

The music-and-movie spectacle will also feature four of the Oscar-winning costumes from the film – which will be on display in the lobby Severance.

Anthony Parnther, who conducted the score for the film’s sequel, will lead the orchestra – which will be joined by Senegalese percussionist, who played on the soundtrack.

The orchestra will also host pre-concert talks both nights, including a Saturday Q&A with Derrick and Kevin Boseman, brothers of the late Chadwick Boseman. More info here.

The 216 Rundown

Sport talkers hit the comedy club

A lot of sports talkers are blowhards. Hey, aren’t we all – especially when it comes to sports? Blame sports!

There’s some of that on the Ultimate Cleveland Sport Show. But the show – which features Cleveland sports talkers Jay Crawford, Adam the Bull, G Bush, Tyvis Powell & Mikey McNuggets — also boasts a light-hearted touch a sense of humor.

Which is the reason it’s the become the most popular streaming sports show — 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The UCCS crew is working overtime: At 8:45 tonight, it will hit Hilarities Theater at Pickwick & Frolic to share sports tales and talks, talk smack and break out some guests, gags and stories.

All proceeds from the event will be donated to the Northeast Ohio Boys & Girls Club. More info here.

Time to tango

The Oblivion Project: Nuevo Tango of Astor Piazzolla at Cleveland Museum of Art: Argentine modern-tango Astor Piazzolla wrote over 3,000 songs and revolutionized the traditional tango by incorporating elements from jazz and classical music. Cleveland’s Oblivion Project will be joined by Argentine opera singer Malena Dayen to pay tribute to Piazolla’s music. 7 p.m. Friday. More info here.
