St. Patrickā€™s Day? More like a four-day party

Photos courtesy Cleveland Memory Project

Yes, itā€™s a celebration of Irish spirit. But St. Patrickā€™s Day is also that time of year when all eyes are smiling in Cleveland.

Itā€™s a sign that spring is around the corner ā€“ March 20, to be exact.

Of course, the holiday honors the time a shepherd named Maewyn Succat took the name Patrick upon entering the priesthood in 418 A.D.

Itā€™s also a celebration of Clevelandā€™s ethnic fabric. Weā€™re all Irish on March 17.

Founded in 1867 and with roots that go back to 1842, the St. Patrickā€™s Day Parade has brought all walks to the heart of the city. It connected the area with downtown Cleveland for decades, even as residents were fleeing for the suburbs.

The 2025 installment of the parade will begin at the intersection of Superior Avenue and East 18th Street. It will travel southwest on Superior to West Roadway. The parade will then head northwest on West Roadway for one block, then northeast on Rockwell Avenue. It will end at the intersection of Rockwell and Ontario roughly two hours later.

Because St. Patrickā€™s Day is Monday, it amounts to a four-day party. There are countless weekend celebrations ā€“ so check out the 216 Rundown below.

Donā€™t worry, weā€™ll be back on Monday with more parties taking place on the Big Day.

NASA mission to Marsā€¦ But first Cleveland?

Five of the wealthiest seven counties are located around Washington D.C. The nationā€™s capital benefits from Federal bureaucracy, but also pharmaceutical and biotech research, lobbyists, consultants and legal services.

The Trump Administration has considered moving some agencies to different regions to cut costs.

Hello, Cleveland?

Ohio lawmakers of both parties and civic leaders united to lobby the administration to make the city the headquarters for NASA.

In a letter to Vice President JD Vance and NASA Administrator Designate Jared Isaacman, Ohio lawmakers have asked for the moving of the headquarters to the area.

The letter refers to Ohio being the birthplace of aviation and the importance of NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland. It contends a move here would optimize the space at Glenn and reduce costs.

Also, Cleveland is significantly cheaper: You would need around $5,596 here to maintain the same standard of life that takes $8,900 in D.C.

Greater Cleveland Partnership, the regionā€™s largest economic development organization, has joined the lobbying efforts.

In a statement on LinkedIn, GCP states:

ā€œGreater Cleveland is the home of NASA Glenn Research Center ā€“ an innovation powerhouse in aeronautics, nuclear power, and space technologies. That is supported by and connected to Ohioā€™s critical national defense installations, cutting-edge research laboratories, highly distinguished science & engineering programs, and network of innovative aerospace businesses. Our center and all these assets make Cleveland a great region for NASA. The technologies being developed here will propel and connect astronauts and missions to the Moon, Mars, and beyond.ā€

Moving NASA HQ to the area would create about 18,000 jobs for the local economy. The lease for the agencyā€™s D.C. HQ expires in 2028. Politicians from Texas and Florida are also lobbying the administration for their respective states.

Odds of a sports betting tax are dropping ā€” weed and cigarettes, also

As we reported on February 5, Mike DeWine hates sin ā€“ so much so that he proposed doubling the tax on sports betting for the second time in three years, from 10% to 20% to 40% in the 2026-2007 budget.

He also called for a doubling of the tax on weed, from 10% to 20%, and increasing the tax on cigarettes, from $1.50 a pack to $3.10.

Not so fast.

Ohio lawmakers are set to drop the tax increases from the budget. House Republicans are uneasy about more tax increases.

The expected increases in revenue from the sports betting tax would help fund sports facilities, like the planned Cleveland Browns stadium project. The 40% tax would make Ohio one of the most unfriendly sports gambling states in the country.

On Wednesday, DeWine reaffirmed his support for the tax to fund stadiums in his State of the State Address.

Burntwood is rekindling in Solon

Burntwood is undergoing a rekindling. After being closed for 10 days, the Solon location of the popular area restaurant group will re-open today.

The bar-restaurant, 33675 Solon Road, has tweaked the menu and made some structural changes.

ā€œTo open up the restaurant space for our guests, we moved the bar and took out the structure's side wall, creating a spacious outdoor patio space,ā€ according to Monven Group, which owns and operates the Burntwood brand. ā€œWe also built out the exclusive Harvest Room which provide the unique opportunity for special events to be held right inside the restaurant.ā€

The group has re-organized its portfolio, which resulted in the closing of its Crocker Park, Lyndhurst and Chagrin Falls locations.
