IN THE NEWS

NBA regular season is over: What’s next for the Cavs?

Photos courtesy Cleveland Cavaliers

Cleveland Cavaliers’ coach Kenny Atkinson was faced with a tight rope walk… rest on one side, rhythm on the other.

After building up an eight-game lead over the Celtics in the Eastern Conference (after a 16-game winning streak) Atkinson knew he had a cushion.

It was imperative to keep the top seed, guaranteeing home-court advantage throughout the conference playoffs. But he didn’t want to tax the team and risk injury.

The concern was amplified after a Donovan Mitchell ankle injury that resulted in the Cavs’ leader sitting out the last four games of the season.

But there was also the rhythm. The team struggled for much of the last month, losing four games in a row and muddling about even in victories.

So, with the season over, first place secured and the team rebounding from its slump, here are the keys to the playoffs:

  • Health: Mitchell is expected to be ready for the playoffs. Ditto for Ty Jerome, who missed five games due to a knee injury, who is also ready for the playoffs.

  • Darius Garland: He struggled since the All-Star break,  but was impressive in an April 2 win over the Knicks.

  • DeAndre Hunter: Never a great rebounder, he was forced to spend more time guarding bigs and getting rebounds. He grabbed 11 rebounds in an April 10 loss to the Pacers. He’ll be counted on to do more in the playoffs.

  • Defense: Over the last month, the Cavs were the 10th best defensive team in the NBA. Not good enough for the playoffs, especially when it comes to defending the three-point shot, where opponents’ shooting percentage rose from 35.8% to 45.6 percent.

First look: Much-anticipated Sofia’s Kitchen + Bar opens Tuesday

Photos by John Petkovic

Immigrant Son owner Andrew Revy has described his new venture -- Sofia’s Kitchen + Bar, 197625 Detroit Avenue, Lakewood -- as a cross between “a corner bar and an American bistro.”

On Tuesday, the public will get its first look at the concept, when Sofia’s opens in the building that once housed Salt (a popular eatery that closed in 2024 after an eight-year run).

Salt fans will notice some cosmetic changes. Right away, there’s the new entrance (via Detroit Avenue, rather than the corner of Detroit and Rockway Avenue). There’s also the new lighting and color schemes.

But Sofia’s didn’t require a radical (or expensive) makeover. That, and the location, made Sofia’s an easy call.

Revy revealed his new space and the menu during a private sneak-peek over the weekend.

No doubt, the menus reflect the corner-bar-meets-bistro concept. The drink list features 10 cocktails, including a stellar take on the Negroni – the AnnaGroni – and the tart, flavorful gin-based Blackberry Smash. There are also five immigrant Son beers on tap and a deep wine list.

The deviled eggs and chickpea battered veggies are enticing, light openers. Entrées include a walleye with a pistachio crust – one of the rotating seafood items – and items like pork prime rib, grilled ribeye and the sesame noodle salad (no doubt, crafted with summer in mind).

On the surface, TVs might not indicate much. But there are three screens over the bar – versus none when it was Salt – and they emphasize the corner-bar side of the equation. They were all dialed in to a Guardians game Saturday, which underscores that Sofia’s is much a place where you can sip a beer and watch a game as it is an upscale-casual eatery.

No yoke: Eggshelland, a Cleveland tradition, is back

Photos courtesy Eggshelland

Egg-cellent! A Cleveland Easter tradition has been reborn. Here comes Eggshelland, an attraction whose roots go back to 1957.

That’s when Lyndhurst couple Ron and Betty Manolio began the annual tradition of transforming their front yard into an Easter egg-stravaganza, using more than 40,000 real, painted eggshells to create elaborate themed displays.

They gathered the shells from local diners and restaurants, carefully cleaning and painting them at home to create their free annual display.

The beloved tradition ended in 2013 following Ron’s death.  But a local preservation group, Euclid Beach Boys, brought Eggshelland back to life, using tens of thousands of the Manolio’s former shells and displays.

Since 2022, Eggshelland has made its seasonal home at Eddy’s Fruit Farm,12079 Caves Road, Chesterland.

It’s open through Saturday. Eddy’s also has an arts and crafts station for kids, and an Easter market selling candy, chocolates, cider and more. For more info, go here.

VINTAGE CLEVELAND

The Cavs are heading to the playoffs after clinching the top seed in the Eastern Conference. The team has never been better positioned to win an NBA Championship since  2016, when the Lebron-led Cavs won their first title in franchise history – as they became the first team to come back from a 3–1 deficit against the Golden State Warriors to win the Finals.
