Flower on Freeman transforms an old dive bar into a luxurious cocktail lounge

Photos by John Petkovic (except food photos courtesy Flower on Freeman)

It’s more than the opening of a new restaurant. It’s a reflection of a changing neighborhood – one that has seen townhouses (fetching between $500-$750k) replace frame houses built for factory workers in the 19th century.

Built in 1890, the single-family home at 2102 Freeman Avenue in Tremont was a speakeasy in the 1920s and, decades later, a bar that came to be known as Duck Island Club.

It was a popular hangout for the scruffy set -- Tremontsters who came for cheap drinks and dive-bar sensibilities. It was shut down when it tried to be a speakeasy: The owner was arrested and imprisoned for bribing a policer to work security at the bar if the officer let him operate the bar after-hours.

Those were very different times.

Enter Flower on Freeman. The just opened cocktail lounge rolls out a wholly new look and feel – with a glowing bar, cushy couches, elaborate wall paper, a glitzy, glam vibe and club music on the speakers.

Operated by Luxe Kitchen owner Melissa Cole, it takes a high-end approach to drinks like cocktail stalwart Velvet Tango Room, located around the corner. The Flower features more than 20 luxurious elixirs, including the vodka-based Caviar Tini ($26), the tequila-based Little Black Dress ($28) and a Scotch-based Smoked Blossom ($24).

You can still get a High Life, in a nod to Duck Island.

The lounge, whose exterior was completely redone during a lengthy renovation, also boasts snacks, desserts and a small plate menu featuring caviar ($23), pickled shrimp & fried saltines ($15) and a cheese-and-charcuterie ‘Gold Board’ ($22-$44).

Punk with a camera: Photos focus on clubs, bands and people that made the scene

Photos courtesy Jim Lanza

Like the punk and underground bands he loved, Clevelander Jim Lanza didn’t have any plans to become a professional photographer. He just had a camera, liked to snap photos and document a night out.

But one roll led to another and another – which means a ton of photos when you’ve been hanging out at clubs since the 1980s.

One day last year, Lanza came upon boxes of old negatives in his basement. He hadn’t thought about them for years… then a flash went off in his head.

“I had thousands of photos and negatives and figured I should let people see them,” he says. “So, why not do a show?”

Here it comes: “Fans and Cameras: 45 years taking photos of unpopular bands and weird people.”

On Saturday, the exhibition opens at Sixty Bowls Gallery, 3125 Detroit Avenue, Cleveland.

It features 150 shots taken at clubs, like the long-gone Lakefront, Pop Shop and Phantasy. There are also bands: Ramones, Starvation Army, Black Flag, the Cramps, Dead Boys, Nick Cave and Marilyn Manson.

“I never had a photo pass or went as a photographer,” says Lanza. “I just always had a camera with me and liked to take photos from a fan’s perspective and capture what it was like to be at a show.”

The opening reception runs 3 p.m. to 7:30pm. It closes May 3, with a performance by Detroit band Bat Hearse, followed after-party at Treelawn in Collinwood starring Missile Toe (Akron) and Ruiners (Detroit). More info here.

Spring tours to chase the snow away: Take a Hike launches new season

Photos coutesy Take a Hike, Ukrainian Museum Archives and GCP

For weeks, we reported -- with great hope – on signs of spring, only to find snow on the ground every morning after.

Here we go again with a chance to step into spring and step back in time.

At 1 p.m. Saturday, Take a Hike – a group known for its immersive guided tours through Cleveland's historic neighborhoods – is throwing a party at the Arcade to kick-off its 2025 spring season.

The bash will feature Ukrainian bandura players, dancing Slovenian Kurents, accordionist Marco Vatove, Ling Yun Rising Star and the Steller Acrobatic Dance Academy and light bites and beverages.

Held on Sundays and Tuesdays in May and June, the new 45- to 60-minute spring strolls will explore the legacies of communities that helped shape the city: A Ukrainian Heritage stroll in Tremont; a tour of Woodland Cemetery and a Slovenian heritage in the St. Clair Superior neighborhood.

Saturday’s party doubles as an unveiling ceremony for a Cleveland heritage exhibit in the Arcade called Timeless Traditions/Modern Celebrations. More info here.

The 216 Rundown

Hey, Ho, Let’s Emo

It’s a chance to dance, hold hands, wear a lot of makeup and let your emotions run amok. Woohoo, let’s hear it for Emo Prom 2025. At 9 tonight, the bash hits the Winchester, 12112 Madison Avenue, Cleveland. The soiree will feature DJs spinning emo and pop-punk and, yes, a king and queen will be crowned. Prom attire is encouraged but not required. More info here.

Wanna get witchy?

Let’s party with the necromancers – not to mention witches, warlocks, & demons. Egads, no, it’s GlamGore: The Witch Ball. At 9:30 tonight, the April installment of the monthly alternative and themed drag show hits the Grog Shop, 2785 Euclid Heights Boulevard, Cleveland. It features a gaggle of performance artists, from beauty queens to drag monsters – and this month, they pay tribute to witches from pop culture, movies, literature, film, and legend. More info here.

Why grow old when there’s pixie dust?

Break out the pixie dust. Peter Pan is coming and Tinkerbell, the Lost Boys, Tick Tock Croc and Captain Hook aren’t far behind. Wait, you mean we’re going to Neverland? Oh, grow up – it’s Connor Palace Theater in Playhouse Square. The acclaimed musical, directed by Emmy Award winner Lonny Price, will have showings Friday through Sunday. It features enchanting and iconic ditties including “I’m Flying,” “I Gotta Crow,” “I Won’t Grow Up” and “Neverland.” For times and tickets, go here.

7 p.m. Saturday: Cheetah Chrome’s Dead Boys hit Cleveland

Two punk legends passed away in the last week – Clem Burke, drummer of Blondie, and Dave Allen, bassist in Gang of Four. All the Ramones have died. Ditto for the New York Dolls.

And, yet, Dead Boy’s guitarist Cheetah Chrome is still going strong. The Cleveland native and punk legend has been told he wouldn’t live long if he didn’t change his hard-partying ways since co-founding the Dead Boys in 1976.

As it turns out, the Keith Richards of punk is on tour with a new version of the Dead Boys that he formed. The band’s “Young, Loud and Snotty” remains one of rock’s most blazing debuts – and fans of all ages continue to cite it as a classic.

The Dead Boys hit the Foundry, 4256 Pearl Road, Cleveland. Also on the bill: Burn Kit, Hams, American Werewolves.
