Record Store Day: Black Friday for shops and a reminder of their role in music

Where would we be if not for record stores? For sure, we wouldnât be the âRock and Roll Capital of the World.â
After all, it was Record Rendezvous, the legendary Prospect Avenue shop, where owner Leo Mintz started calling ârace recordsâ rock nâ roll in the 1950s. Alan Freed picked up the baton and threw the Moondog Coronation Ball. And Cleveland came to be known as the âCradle of Rock.â
Despite the internet and streaming, record shops still play a crucial role in spreading the gospel of rock.
Since 2008, Record Store Day has celebrated that role and, in the process, created the equivalent of Black Friday for record stores.
It will do so again on Saturday, when vinyl enthusiasts line up for limited edition releases at participating shops like A Current Year, My Mindâs Eye and Record Den
Many labels release discs by artists specifically for the day -- resulting in a tenfold jump in business for the shops.
Check out our guide to area record stores in The 216 Rundown section below.
âMusic fans feel compelled to buy because itâs an event,â says Pete Gulyas, owner of Blue Arrow Records in Collinwood. âBut every day is record store day.â

Shooters gets another shot: Iconic West Bank club to reopen after renovation

An iconic club on the West Bank of the Flats is set for a new life. A new building permit has been issued for $1 million project to renovate Shooters on the Water.
The permit, posted on the front door of the former location for the sprawling venue, shows that work has already begun.
It includes electrical and plumbing work, and the rebuilding of the bathrooms and repairs to the deck along the Cuyahoga River.
The building is owned by Nautica Entertainment LLC. The lessee is Shooters Yacht Club, which is likely to be the new name of the venue.
Shooters opened to much fanfare in June 1987. For decades, it has hosted diners, drinkers and dance parties â and been a pillar of stability, amid countless openings and closings and waves of changes.
It closed last summer. With its location and views of the river and lake, it was only a matter of time before it would get a makeover and reopen.
Cherished (and stolen) statue gets last look before itâs off to Turkey

Letâs clear something up before anyone accuses the Cleveland Museum of Art of being in possession of stolen goodsâŚ
The Turkish government and the New York District Attorneyâs Office have agreed to allow the museum to display âThe Draped Male Figureâ until July 8 to give visitors once last chance to see the six-foot tall bronze statue.
Valued at $20 million, it has been one of the most popular and most recognizable items in the CMA collection since it was purchased in 1986 (for $1.85 million) from a New York art dealer.
That is until 2023, when an investigation determined that it was part of an elaborate art heist that led back to Turkey, as we previously reported.
In the 1950s and â60s, countless Greco-Roman were unearthed in southwestern Turkey. Many were looted and ended up on the black market, ultimately surfacing in museums and private collections.
The headless statue has been traced back to a site commonly known as Sebasteion in the ancient city of Bubon.
It was long thought to depict Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius, but an investigation found that it is likely a representation of a Greek philosopher.
After its CMA stay, the headless figure will return home as part of a settlement with the Turkish government.
Parma police crack French Bulldog caper with sting operation

It was the case of the missing French Bulldog. It took deft detective work and a sting operation to crack the caper and deliver the pooch.
Anatomy of the crimeâŚ
On Saturday, a Parma familyâs two French Bulldogs escaped from their fenced backyard due to an unsecured gate.
One dog was found by a neighbor, but the second was taken by a man driving a maroon Hyundai. A good Samaritan nearby noted the license plate as the man sped away.
The police checked the address of the car owner. The Hyundai wasnât there. A person at the home refused to talk.
The dog owner then posted a reward on social media for the safe return of the dog. After increasing the reward to $2,500, the owner was contacted on Sunday by a female stating that she had the dog and wanted the reward money.
It all seemed fishy â so the Parma cops sprang into action with a sting operation.
A meeting was set up to exchange the dog for cash. Officers set up out of view of the meeting place and saw a male and female arrive with the pooch.
Boom: Officers confronted the duo and arrests were made. The man, LaShawn Cortez Burt, 33, of Cleveland, has been charged with felony theft.
The dogs, meanwhile, are home and happy.

VINTAGE CLEVELAND
Call it the cradle of rock⌠Where owner Leo Mintz saw white kids buying ârace recordsâ â 78 rpm discs that were marketed to black America -- and decided there was something to this music. Long live rock ânâ roll! Record Rendezvous continued to play a key role in the 1970s, but changing trends and flight from downtown led to its closing in 1987.
