First look: Much-anticipated Foundry opening in Old Brooklyn

Shows kept getting moved. Regulars kept asking the same question. And the wait went on and on.
No more: The Foundry has re-opened in its new location -- 4256 Pearl Road, Old Brooklyn.
One of the area’s longest-running rock clubs hosted its first show on Saturday. It didn’t come with great fanfare. After all, the club – which closed its Lakewood location on Jan. 19 – was originally scheduled to open six weeks ago.
“It took longer than we first thought,” said owner Rae Gentry. “Actually, it didn’t take all that long when you think about all the things we had to do.”
The to-do list included building a sound booth, stage, bar and electrical system from ground up. And that’s only to get the doors open.
“We have an outdoor space we’re going to renovate,” said Gentry, referring to a yard between the Foundry and Opal, a charming, intimate cocktail bar.
“There’s a patio and a garage that we’ll turn into an outdoor bar area for this summer,” she added. “No cover, it’s for people who just want to drink.”
The circa-1924, 6,464-square-foot building formerly hosted a neighborhood bar, Mr. E’s. The location and additional space offer more musical possibilities.
“We hope to diversify our crowd,” she says. “Before it was mostly from Lakewood, but now we can also attract people from Parma and Cleveland – and there are a lot of people moving to Old Brooklyn.”
The neighborhood has seen the opening of popular bar-restaurant Never Say Dive and will soon greet a cocktail bar, the Witch Doctor.
“The city has been great to work with,” said Gentry. “They want this area to take off.”
Saturday’s crowd, a mix of punks, rockers and metalheads, was more focused on the here and now. So was Nick Wolfe, singer of the Gemini Lounge.
“The next song is about all the clubs that have closed,” he said. “We’re happy to be the first band playing the Foundry on opening night…”
The band kicked in before he could finish the thought.
Pierogies on ice: Cleveland leads a crazy sports phenomenon

Yeah, whatever, yawn, yawn, yawn – typical promotions by the major leaguers.
The Monsters are getting downright avant-garde with this stuff. Earlier this month, Cleveland’s AHL hockey team hosted Pucks and Paws, where you can bring your dog to the game.
This weekend, the team will transition from Monsters to Pierogis when it hosts Pucks and Pierogies. It’s part of a zany new phenomenon in sports promotions that involves total identify transformation.
(The team takes on the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Tickets and info here.)
Players will wear jerseys featuring a cartoonish skating, stick-wielding, doughboy and the area will update its signage to include the new logo. The black and blue colors are out. Here come the colors of the Polish flag.
Yes, it’s odd. But it’s part of a broader trend in identity takeover nights in minor league sports in which teams take on names like: the Erie Pepperoni Balls, Springfield Ice-O-Topes, Hartford Steamed Cheeseburgers or the Reading Whoopies.

Skrtic, who oversees the Library Collection, is an avid fan of city and area history -- everything from iconic Cleveland restaurants to iconoclastic characters.
At 8 p.m. Tuesday, Skrtic will team up with comedian Mike Polk Jr. for an evening of Cleveland history and comedy at the Grog Shop, 2785 Euclid Heights Boulevard, Cleveland Heights. For tickets and more info, go here.

Magnetic Fields bring 69 Songs Anniversary tour to Agora
Stephin Merritt has been taking his Magnetic Fields around the country to mark the 25th anniversary of the band’s 1999 opus, “69 Love Songs” – a three-volume concept album that features, yes, 69 songs clocking in eight minutes shy of three hours.
He’d initially planned on 100 songs, until he realized just how long that it would be.
The Magnetic Fields will hit the stage at the Cleveland Agora, 5000 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland, for two shows – 8 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday. For tickets, go here.
National Rib Cook-off & Beer Fest back for another year
Memorial Day Weekend marks the opening of festival season in Greater Cleveland and a perennial favorite has announced its return. Berea’s National Rib Cook-Off & Beer Fest is set to return to Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds.

Say hey to Suhani the sloth bear cub
She has her balance and a name and she’s ready to party.
Earlier this month, we reported on the latest arrival to the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo – a sloth bear cub born in December at a mere 16 ounces.
After bonding behind her mother — sloth bear cubs are completely dependent on mom after they’re born – she was the subject of an online vote to give her a name and provide donations to support the conservation of the vulnerable species.
Here comes Suhani, which means "pleasant" in Hindi. The cub will now start exploring her outdoor habitat in Susie’s Bear, which is open to the public. Viewing will depend on the weather and the whims of the mother, Shiva.
VINTAGE CLEVELAND
The Cleveland Electrical Exposition of 1914, downtown. The Exposition was designed to demonstrate many practical uses of electricity and to proclaim Cleveland as the first city to achieve national acclaim in the electrical industry. Thomas Edison pulled the switch which illuminated East 13th Street.
