When Irish Eyes are Smiling… We all sing a Cleveland song

More than 500,000 people are expected to hit downtown today for the St. Patrick’s Day parade. It’s a day when everyone is Irish and joins together to sing "When Irish Eyes are Smiling.”

After all, the music to the 1912 standard, which has become synonymous with St. Patrick’s Day, was composed by a Clevelander, Ernest Ball — and he’s buried in Lake View Cemetery. And he wasn’t even Irish.

It’s all good on St. Patrick’s Day.

The parade, founded in 1867 and one of the oldest in the country, brings all walks to the heart of the city to celebrate tradition and ethnic diversity.

The parade kicks at the intersection of Superior Avenue and East 18th Street at 1:04 p.m. For more info, go here.

The celebration starts much earlier – 6 a.m. – at Slyman’s.

Since 1964, the classic Cleveland deli – 3106 St Clair Ave NE, Cleveland – has opened to long lines waiting for it famed corned beef sandwiches on St. Pat’s Day.

Countless other area bars and eateries will start early and go late. For more info, check out our St. Patrick’s Day Guide in The 216 Rundown down below.

Act fast: Picasso’s last stand at CMA

The Wall Street Journal has called it the best-kept secret of the art season. Most of the shows have been sold out.

So, you better act quickly if you want to see “Picasso on Paper.”  The exhibition is closing on Sunday at the Cleveland Museum of Art, 11150 East Boulevard.

The show offers a rare glimpse into Picasso’s paper works and the importance they played in his development and execution of ideas that made him one of the world’s most important artists.

At times, it was the most immediate way for Pablo Picasso to express himself and develop his sensibilities before embarking on his most revolutionary and greatest paintings.

Other times, he used paper out of necessity – while living in occupied Paris and other supplies were in short supply. He would often grab any paper he could find, even a paper tablecloth and start working.

The show features nearly 300 works and includes the masterwork Femmes à leur toilette (1937–38), a 9 13/16 x 14 ½ foot collage of cut-and-pasted papers, which will be exhibited for the first time in the United States. For tickets and info, go here.

DeWine joins chorus to sing Ohio’s praise for NASA

On Friday, we drew the vast contrast between the cost of living in Cleveland vs. Washington D.C.

It’s staggering: You would need around $5,596 here to maintain the same standard of life that costs $8,900 in D.C. After all, five of the country’s wealthiest counties surround Washington D.C.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and  Lt. Gov. Jim Tressel are now making the same case to convince President Donald Trump to move NASA’s headquarters to NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland

“Cleveland, home to the NASA Glenn Research Center, offers a significantly lower cost of living and operating expenses than Washington,” wrote DeWine and Tressel in a letter to Trump. “This is an optimal time to move headquarters out of Washington, D.C., take advantage of a much more economical location and gain significant efficiencies.”

Their letter follows an appeal by Ohio lawmakers to move NASA HQ to Cleveland. The move is supported by Greater Cleveland Partnership.

DeWine has never been known to be close to Trump and is leaving office in 2026. However, moving NASA to Ohio would be a big political boost to Trump ally Vivek Ramaswamy, who is running to take DeWine's place.
